Chocolate Butterfly Cake Hack

Servings: 12 servings

  • 200 g self raising flour
  • 225 g caster sugar
  • 25 g cocoa powder
  • 100 g butter
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 5 tbsp milk
  • 5 tbsp water
  • 1 tub chocolate frosting
  • 3 bags smarties
  • 1 bag giant chocolate buttons

  • Pre-heat the oven to 180C/Gas 4.
  • Grease 2 20cm sandwich tins and line. Don’t use a loose bottomed tin as the mixture will run out.
  • In a bowl combine flour, sugar, salt and cocoa. Rub in the butter until breadcrumbs form.
  • Beat the eggs with the milk and add to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
  • Place the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 20-25 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
  • Leave to cool completely. Once cool, slice the cake into 3. One section down the middle and two halves. Do this to the other cake too.
  • Then place the curved side against the rectangular middle of cake. Cut out a small triangle into the straight edge of the cake half. This gives you the butterfly wings.
  • Assemble the cake with chocolate icing and spread over the top. Use giant chocolate buttons for the butterfly's middle and two broken in half for the antennas.
  • Then fill the cake with smarties, trying to match the pattern on each side!
  • And ta-da one super simple butterfly cake.
